a word of thanks and a new canvas.

Sometimes, you start something new.

That something grows into another something and before you know it, it’s turned into this Thing that you never intended it to be.

So it is with The Outdoor Wife.

When I started this blog a couple of years ago, I had the intention of talking about living a life passionate for the outdoors. Then I wrote a faith post. Then I wrote another faith post. Then I wrote about depression. Then I wrote more faith posts and more and more people started reading and it spun out and why am I writing again? What am I doing in this box?

That’s what happened. Somehow, in the scheme of things and my progression as a blogger, I backed myself into a corner creatively. I’ve been suffocating here. I sit down to write a post about my undying love for Jon Stewart and it just doesn’t feel right here. This space and what it’s known for doesn’t really allow for that kind of content. I asked some of my fellow writers what they expected when they read The Outdoor Wife. The answers they gave me confirmed that I had put myself in a box I never wanted to be in.

My friends, it’s time to light the whole damn box on fire.

I took the advice of some knowledgable, wise friends who have been living the creative life for a long time… they all said it:

If it’s keeping you locked in, burn it to the ground and start new.

So, my work here is done. This is the last post that you’ll read at The Outdoor Wife.

But what is rising from the ashes is something good. Something better. Something way more real and way more ME.

With the help of some creative & genius friends, I’ve built a new blog home.

What’s it called?

Nish Happens.

What’s the new blog about? Me. And whatever I feel like typing when I sit down at the computer. You’ll find that I’ll write posts about design, motherhood, politics, pop culture, faith, marriage, photography, the creative life, cooking, and yes… even living a life passionate about the outdoors.

It’s just me. Unedited, raw, unpolished me. On a website. For the whole world to read.

Someone pass the wine?

So what do YOU need to know? Not much. You can click over and poke around. You’ll see that only a few select posts from here are over in the new house. That’s on purpose. I need a clean, empty canvas. My posts for World Vision were transfered over, as well as a couple select pieces that are important to me.

There’s still a few minor things to hammer out (like Sponsor info, for those interested, and I need to finish up my Facebook page). As of tonight, I’ll transfer all of your subscriptions to the new place, so you won’t have to change a thing. But I wanted to give you the opportunity to hear from me here before I made the switch.

I so appreciate all of you who have read this blog for so long… who have been with me from the beginning.

I hope you’ll join me on a whole new adventure.

Best to you, my dear, dear friends.

  1. What an exciting update :) Can’t wait to read more from Nish Happens (awesome title btw)!!!

  2. good for you. I couldn’t agree more. I had to do the same. It’s like that ache or burning inside that we know just doesn’t feel right.

  3. Starting fresh is such a beautiful thing! Enjoy your new space…I’m sure we all will.

  4. Love the new blog name, Nish! Onward and upward, friend.

  5. I totally understand! 2 years ago I married a pastor and my “That’s What She Said” blog began to feel really, really weird. He actually encouraged me to keep up with it, but I no longer felt like I could be my same ol snarky self! I started writing about God and faith and as much as I loved it, I felt like I backed myself into a corner and now have nothing else to write about.

Good for you for breaking free and being yourself!

  6. So fun! I saw your IG post before I read this so now it all makes sense. Best wishes for a fun new place that’s all you! :)

  7. The first thing I thought of when I heard your new title is how fitting and how clever. It’s so you!
I can’t tell you how inspired I am by your decision. I’ve let the boxed in feeling keep me from writing. I’ve thought about a new space for myself before and now you’ve got me entertaining those thoughts again. Congratulations on your fresh start! I can’t wait to see the you that is allowed to come through over at your new space.

  8. So great. I’m so excited for you about this, Nish!

  9. Now that I read this post I am understanding everything! I will move to new blog today!!!

  10. Really, really awesome…. and it’s exactly what I did to myself on my blog. 1 month ago I stopped posting. And I can’t seem to go back because every time I do it doesn’t feel right. But you are inspiring me to maybe mix it up and to not give up. Heading over to your new place right this second.
